Ruth and Carl, most afternoons around four.

My daughter begged me not to do it. At seventy four, she said, you don't fall in love. You embarrass the family.

I understood her. Her father and I were married for forty six years. When he passed, I folded that part of my life away like a winter coat I would never need again. I did the crosswords. I watered the tomatoes. I told everyone I was fine.

Then Carl started showing up at the community garden on Tuesdays. He was terrible at it. He overwatered everything and blamed the soil. It took him three months to admit he only came because I was there.

We are both widowed. We both know exactly what love costs, and we said yes to it anyway.

Here is the truth: we did not want a wedding. We had those. Beautiful ones, with people who are gone now. What we wanted was something quieter. Something we could touch every day without explaining it to anyone.

The necklace never comes off. Neither does the smile, apparently.

So instead of rings, we chose two necklaces. Mine carries his name. His carries mine. But not written out for the world to read. Each name is drawn by hand into a single intertwined mark, the letters folded into each other like the two of us. Unless you know what it says, you will never guess.

My daughter noticed it at Sunday lunch. She stared at my neck and asked what the symbol meant. When I told her it says Carl, and that his says Ruth, she went quiet. Then she cried, right there over the roast. She told me later it was the first time she understood that I had not replaced her father. I had just decided to be loved again.
