Same table, same order, forty five years running.

Rosie, Linda and me. Forty five years, three weddings, two divorces, seven kids between us, one terrifying diagnosis that turned out okay, and roughly ten thousand cups of coffee at the same corner table.

We met in 1981, in a typing class none of us needed. We have lived in three different states since. It never mattered. Some people you choose once and then keep choosing, every year, without ever saying it out loud.

This year all three of us turn sixty. Rosie in March, me in July, Linda hanging on until November like always.

Sixty felt like the year to stop treating our friendship like it was unofficial.

Sisters get the family name. Couples get the rings. Best friends get... a group chat. It suddenly seemed unfair. Forty five years deserves something you can hold.

It was Linda's idea, because the good ideas are always Linda's and the courage to actually do them is always Rosie's. Three matching bracelets. Our three initials, F, R and L, drawn by hand into one single intertwined mark. Not three letters sitting next to each other. One design where you cannot tell where one of us ends and the next begins. Which, honestly, has been the situation since 1981.

We made it official in gold.

They arrived two weeks before Rosie's birthday. We put them on together at the corner table, and the waiter who has served us for a decade asked if we had joined a club. Linda said yes. Membership closed in 1981.
